Using AI to Create Marketing Materials
Overview
Students can use AI to help them create marketing material as part of their final project, and they are then asked to evaluate the quality of the AI-generated content.
Why Use This?
This activity helps students brainstorm ideas for marketing material (such as a flier or PowerPoint presentation) and practice using AI. The reflection part of the activity pushes students to critically reflect on the AI’s output, evaluating its quality, determining what needs improvement, and highlighting the limitations of AI and the importance of reviewing and revising the generated content.”
How Does It Work?
Students are asked to create marketing material as part of their final project. In the assignment instructions, students are given a short list of AI tools and reflection questions to critique the tool’s output. Here are the instructions as an example:
Instructions
Scenario
The board really liked what you submitted for the board packet. Now it’s time to present your idea before the full board of directors. You are getting ready to finalize your draft proposal and incorporate the feedback you received.
Review the proposal criteria as outlined in the Proposal Part 2 assignment.
Incorporate any feedback you received on your first draft.
Format your written proposal correctly. The final draft must be typed, double-spaced, and have 1-inch left and 1.5-inch right margins. In all other ways, follow AMA style when formatting and organizing your paper sections. For more information about AMA style, see the latest edition of the Publication Manual of the American Medical Association or an updated online resource such as the AMA Style websiteLinks to an external site. or the Purdue Online Writing LabLinks to an external site..
Assemble at least one marketing material you created for your proposal to submit with your final draft. These materials could include handouts, fliers/pamphlets, PowerPoints, etc. Using ChatGPT or other generative AI (e.g., Bing Copilot, Google Gemini, etc.) is okay for this step.
If you use generative AI, write a paragraph describing what you would change to improve what was generated and also include the prompt you typed into the tool, which should include detailed information that you fed into the tool.
Review your proposal one last time using the rubric and Writing for an Audience section to guide you. This is the same rubric your instructor will use to evaluate your work.
Keep In Mind
Students may not be experienced enough to recognize incorrect information generated by AI, so instructors should pay special attention to the content of the material submitted using AI and urge students to do the same .
