Presenting a Policy Analysis

Overview

Students develop an 8- to 12-minute formal PowerPoint presentation and record themselves presenting using screen-recorder software.

Why Use This?

Having students prepare and deliver a professional presentation lets them practice a skill they will be using in their work lives. Watching their own recordings also gives students the opportunity to spot areas for improvement and evaluate their effectiveness at persuasive speaking.

How Does It Work?

In this multi-part assignment for a course in the Health and Wellness Management program, students research a health policy issue and use their knowledge in a final presentation to persuade an audience of imagined key stakeholders to make a policy change. Students use both PowerPoint and screen-recorder software (Screencast-O-Matic, now ScreenPal) to create and record their final presentations.

Instructions

In this part, you will develop a formal presentation using Screencast-O-MaticLinks to an external site..

  1. Identify your audience, such as a key stakeholder, HR manager, benefits director, safety/wellness director, or legislator.
    • Your goal is to persuade your audience to care about your policy or issue (i.e., tap into the emotional or business impact of this policy).
  2. Develop a presentation (i.e., use PowerPoint or another presentation tool).
    • Introduce and summarize the key points of your policy.
    • Consider the following as you develop your presentation:
      • What is the relationship of this policy to your practice as an HWM professional? In other words, why does this matter?
      • What are the intended and unintended (if any) consequences of the policy/law? Consider the “real-world” influence.
      • Did the policy achieve what it set out to do? If not or if the policy is too new, has there been any progress? What metrics can be used to monitor progress?
      • Are there any alternative policy options and recommendations you would recommend moving forward and why?
      • What impacts does this policy have on the budget of the government/public health/employer, etc.? Are there any current or potential funding sources?
      • If you are addressing a workplace policy, identify how the problem/issue and your recommendations fit with the business model.
  3. Conclusion: Your conclusion should be compelling and emphasize why this policy is important to you (choose the appropriate entity—business, the HWM profession, community, etc.).

REMEMBER This is a formal presentation. Be attentive to professional presentation. Your presentation should include PowerPoint slides and be no longer than 8–12 minutes. Include current scholarly citations and references as needed.

Your presentation will be recorded using Screencast-O-MaticLinks to an external site.. Do not use another tool as others may not be able to view your video.

Keep In Mind

  • Ensure the technology is easily accessible. For this course, instructional designer Laurie Berry assisted faculty in finding a free and easy-to-use tool to record.
  • Students should practice using both PowerPoint and the screen-recorder software to deliver and record their presentations before the final is due.
  • Ensure you have a clear rubric that details how the presentations are evaluated.
