Instructions for Show and Tell Activity

Overview

Where did the food you’ve eaten today come from? A chain grocery store like Walmart? A farm down the street from your home? Or maybe you don’t know; you just know you were able to eat it. Does it matter where your food comes from? For some people, it does; for others, perhaps it’s not as important. In this assessment, you will explore the local food supply sources that are accessible to you and the role they play in your nutrition.

Instructions

  1. Create a 3-5 minute video promoting and supporting a sustainable local food supply (i.e., farmer’s market, farm, CSA, pick-your-own farm, farm-to-table restaurant, grocery co-op, local butcher shop, etc.). Local food is defined as food that’s grown or produced in your community and isn’t imported from distant states or countries like a lot of supermarket items.
  2. Identify, by name, the local food supply, and show yourself at this food supply source at some point in the video.
  3. Address the following in your video:
    • Identify at least five “main” foods that this source supplies to the local community.
    • Describe the roles these specific foods play in the local food supply.
    • Explain the effects a sustainable local food supply has on the local community (economically, environmentally, etc.). What would happen if this source did not exist?
    • Identify other local food sources that you have access to. What foods do you regularly consume from them? If not, where is the closest local food supply source you could utilize? How far is that from your home?
    • Explain how you personally promote and support a sustainable food supply. Identify three foods you eat regularly that are from local food sources.

Keep In Mind

Include resources for a variety of technologies that students can use to record their videos.
