Providing Interactive Practice

Overview

Students engage with interactive elements built using a tool called H5P to help them practice some of the tougher concepts in the course.

Why Use This?

Frequent, low-stakes practice opportunities can increase comprehension and understanding. Interactive elements can also provide instant feedback and allow students to practice applying the course material as often as they would like.

How Does It Work?

Once the H5P elements are created, they are simply embedded onto a Canvas page and provided to students as a learning resource. Students receive instructions on how they should interact with these elements and explanations for the correct answers. Students can engage with the H5P content in multiple ways, including checking their understanding or reviewing concepts before an exam.

The image displays an interactive drag-and-drop activity titled "UWX PS101: Lesson 3-Parts of a Neuron". The graphic representation of a neuron shows a central cell body with dendrites branching out from one side and an axon leading to terminal buttons on the opposite side. There are blank labels over the main parts of the neuron awaiting the correct terms to be placed. Below the neuron image, there are draggable options labeled "Cell Body", "Axon", "Dendrites", "Axon Terminal", and "Terminal Buttons". At the bottom of the image is a "Check" button, presumably to submit the answers. The purpose of the activity is to identify and match the parts of a neuron with their correct labels.

Keep In Mind

  • One of our instructional designers used H5P to create these elements. However, this tool is free for anyone to use. You can access it at https://h5p.org/.
  • You can also use features directly in Canvas (such as ungraded quizzes) to create interactive ways for your students to practice the course material.
